Exploring Discipline and Disproportionality

This presentation will unpack some of the complexities of disproportionate representation concerning student discipline. It will also provide participants with a framework and tools for effectively mitigating inequitable, and often ineffective, discipline practices. Utilizing a socio-cultural approach, participants will engage in activities designed to provide a thought-provoking and comprehensive understanding of the root causes of disproportionality. Participants will leave with tools for monitoring disproportionality and solutions for preventing it, and a change in the way they conceptualize behavior and matters of equity in education. As presenters, it is our goal to strike a balance between participants’ desires for practical tools and the foundational need for shifts in perception which enable them to effectively use the tools and address complex challenges concerning equity, diversity, and discipline.
